New Legion Releases Out This Week Oct. 11th, 2007 @ 01:35 pm
This should have been posted yesterday, when this week's comics were released... Sorry about that!

The only Legion-related issue released this week was Countdown: 29 (there was no cover image to grab from DC's website, but I already posted it a few days ago, so look down the blog if you wanna see it!).

COUNTDOWN: 29

Story by Paul Dini; Breakdowns by Keith Giffen; Script by Adam Beechen; Art by Carlos Magno; Cover by Ian Churchill and Norm Rapmund

Karate Kid confronts Brother Eye! Jimmy Olsen is grabbed by Forager! Shadowpact tries to subdue an out-of-control Mary Marvel! The Crime Syndicate, the Extremists and Monarch gather against the Challengers! Holly and Harley arrive on Paradise Island — and begin their "training"! A lucky coin-toss might have Two-Face save Piper and Trickster from Checkmate! And who is the mysterious— but funny — Jokester? Oh, and Mister Mxyzptlk explains it all!

Plus, more DC villains origin back-up stories written by Scott Beatty, including Zod, Deadshot and Two-Face. The COUNTDOWN continues!

DC Universe | 32pg. | Color | $2.99 US

Also, there's a Dominator on the cover of Superman #668, also released yesterday, but I think that's as far as any connection to the LSH goes in that issue.

I'll post some scans (as well as a synopsis) of any Karate Kid/Una stuff from Countdown: 29 later on today.

Legion Online Roundup Oct. 11th, 2007 @ 01:25 pm
Here's what's been going on in the world of Legion-related websites/blogs since my last post. The two big items of interest are a batch of promo pics from "Chain Lightning" (the next episode of the Legion cartoon, which debuts on Saturday, 10/13, featuring the origins of Lightning Lad, Lightning Lass, and Lightning Lord!), and release information on "Legion of Super-Heroes, Volume 2", the second 4-episode DVD from the cartoon series (release date: February 5, 2008).

Counting Down - Countdown: 30 @Newsarama Oct. 6th, 2007 @ 11:14 am
The new installment of "Counting Down", the DC Countdown discussion/interview series at NEWSARAMA, has been posted. There's a few interesting tidbits about Karate Kid in it, as well as the cover to Countdown: 29 (depicting KK and Una), which you can see below (under the cut).

Here's a few quotes of interest from the article (MC=Countdown editor Mike Carlin):

NRAMA: And just so we're getting the implication, when he was giving Karate Kid the hairy eyeball so to speak, Brother Eye is suggesting that Karate Kid is carrying the seeds of the Great Disaster inside him?

MC: See! You folks don't need us!

and...

NRAMA: So – next issue…a focus on the Karate Kid storyline?

MC: Sure looks that way – and I can say that Buddy won’t remain a blank slate forever... In fact he plays a big part in setting up that little boy’s future!

» Legion Omnicom Wins 3rd Place In Creator Grant Contest
Legion of Super-Heroes uber-blog LEGION OMNICOM has won third place in Colleen Doran's Creator Grant contest.

Colleen is a longtime Legion fan and artist (one of my all time favorite issues, Legion of Super-Heroes V4 #31, featured her work -- it really added emotional weight to the dual storylines of Shvaughn Erin revealing that she used to be a man, as well as SW6 Element Lad using his powers to kill). I first encountered her work while reading The Sandman, and I've been a fan of her style ever since (Fun trivia: They say that Neil Gaiman's character Thessaly was modeled after Colleen Doran).

» Legion Cartoon: 4Kids Takes Over Kids Programming On CW.
According to a post at the LEGION CLUBHOUSE, the Kids WB is being dissolved, and the CW is turning instead to 4Kids, the force behind Fox's Saturday morning lineup, to take over it's kids programming.

There's a bunch of business information to absorb, but the point of interest for us Legion fans is this:

Shows on Kids WB now include “Tom and Jerry Tales,” “Shaggy & Scooby Doo Get a Clue,” “Legion of Super Heroes” and “The Batman.”

Some of those shows might continue to air on the WB after 4Kids takes over, Mr. Maatta said.

So, what does that mean? If 4Kids decides NOT to pick up the Legion cartoon, will it simply cease to be? Or will it continue on another network? I think it would be really good for the show if it moved to Cartoon Network, considering the popularity that Teen Titans and Justice League Unlimited experienced while being aired there (and with Cartoon Network's 24 hour programming, there's plenty of opportunities for reruns on a regular, if not daily, basis).

You can read the entire article HERE.

» TV Idea: Bismoll Legal!
I don't watch that much TV... in fact, to save money, I don't even have cable (I DO have a cable connection for my computer, however). So, if I want to watch a show I'm interested in, I either:

A - Buy the DVD box set of said show

or

B - Download individual episodes and burn them to DVD-R.

But I digress. One of the shows I do watch is Boston Legal. I love it. For those not in the know, one of the main characters of the show is Alan Shore (played by James Spader, who's won a boatload of awards for his performance as the character so far): an ethically-challenged lawyer with an acid (and hysterical) wit -- and a heart of gold buried WAY deep down (but he won't admit it!). Well, seeing the return of Matter-Eater Lad (my all-time favorite Legionnaire) to the LSH recently as a shrewd prosecutor for the United Planets, I thought to myself, wouldn't it be great to see a Matter-Eater Lad TV show? Lawyer by day, matter-eating crime fighter by night? Oh yeah, Alan Shore as a super-hero!

It's not TOO much of a stretch. Matter-Eater Lad and Alan share many similarities... the humorous behavior (often to the point of the absurd), the sheer unflappable determination, the womanizing, and of course, the questionable ethics: We need not only look to the current LSH storyline for examples (the most obvious of which was the shocking yet awesome scene where Tenzil bites Mekt's finger off last issue). Lest we forget, this isn't the first time that Tenzil has played lawyer. Wayyyy back in Legion of Super-Heroes V4 #11 (Sept. 1990), Tenzil stars in a reality TV show called "Tenzil for the Defense" where he represents Polar Boy, who has been charged with treason against Earthgov. Tenzil performs a series of wacky courtroom antics that ultimately result in Polar Boy gaining his freedom (hey, it didn't hurt that Tenz had a secret romantic interest in the prosecutor!). I'd suggest any Legion fan sit down and re-read that issue and then watch any given episode of Boston Legal, then consider the comedic possibilities of a law-themed Matter-Eater Lad TV program. If nothing else, I guarantee you'll laugh!

[* This isn't really a Legion-related article, unless you wanna be technical -- like how it mentions Booster Gold, who has a Legion flight ring OR, from a "Six Degrees of DC Nation" standpoint, the panels depict the new Blue Beetle who teamed up with Batman in the last storyarc in The Brave and the Bold (and Batman went on to team up the Legion later on in the same arc) ;-D].
» Selected Highlights from Supergirl and the Legion of Super-Heroes #34
I COULD post a synopsis of the brand-spanking-new issue of S/LSH, but (as I posted previously) Matthew at Legion Abstract already did a great job of that HERE... So instead, here's a 6 page preview!

I really, really dig Tony Bedard's writing, but the art on this storyarc has been pretty underwhelming (and I'm being generous by putting it that way). Although, I DO like Tenzil's character design -- the whole suit-and-tie thing is pretty snazzy... Alas, Mr. Kem is nowhere to be found in THIS issue.
